Glenalmond College

Galbraith Building Consultancy acted as Designer, Project Manager and Contract Administrator for the summer 2025 refurbishment works at Glenalmond College.

Glenalmond College

Galbraith were appointed by Glenalmond College, to lead a series of refurbishment projects across the campus, enhancing key communal spaces for students and staff. Our role included the appointment and coordination of the design team, management of the works from initial concept development through to completion, and close liaison with the College to ensure each space met their vision and functional requirements.

The programme of works included the refurbishment and modernisation of the Sixth Form common room, staff common room suite, boarding house common rooms, and a new café facility. Each area required careful planning to balance contemporary finishes and improved layouts with sensitivity to the heritage and character of the existing buildings.

Works involved the full strip-out and reconfiguration of internal spaces, upgraded finishes throughout, installation of new kitchen and café facilities, remodelling of ceilings, and provision of new bespoke and loose furniture. Architectural details were introduced to complement the historic context while delivering a modern, welcoming environment for daily use.

This project highlights the breadth of expertise across Galbraith, bringing together our Building Surveying, Project Management, and Design coordination capabilities to deliver high-quality spaces that enhance the College’s estate and support the next chapter of its development.

Design

A key priority throughout the project was to deliver spaces that felt warm, comfortable, and homely for both students and staff. The design approach centred on enhancing the character of each area while ensuring the spaces supported rest, social interaction, and productive work. Existing room layouts were sensitively adapted to improve flow and usability, with thoughtful consideration given to natural light, colour palettes, and textures to create a calm and inviting atmosphere. Furniture selections focused on durability without compromising comfort, introducing soft seating, flexible study zones, and relaxed social areas. Subtle architectural features were incorporated to complement the heritage of the buildings, ensuring each space felt both familiar and refreshed. The result is a collection of environments that promote wellbeing, connection, and a strong sense of belonging across the College community.

Communication and Stakeholder Engagement

Effective communication and close collaboration with key stakeholders were central to the success of this project. Galbraith worked closely with College leadership and staff, to understand their requirements, priorities, and daily routines, ensuring that each space would meet both practical and wellbeing needs. Careful planning was required to accommodate the College’s busy summer programme, with activities and events continuing across the campus throughout the construction period. By maintaining clear, proactive communication and coordinating closely with all parties, we were able to schedule works efficiently, minimise disruption, and deliver the project on time. This collaborative approach ensured the refurbishment of each space was seamless and aligned with the College’s operational and community objectives.
