SEPA's Compliance Assessment Scheme

Businesses and other water consumers who abstract, impound or discharge to the water environment have been given the opportunity to comment on a new scheme to assess compliance with environmental licence conditions.

The new compliance scheme will apply to certain licences under the Water Environment (Controlled Activities) (Scotland ) Regulations 2005.

The Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA), in seeking a more streamlined method for assessing compliance, appealed to operators to comment on its consultation.  The call for a new approach follows findings that an improved method of assessment will lead to more effective, transparent and efficient regulation.

The consultation period closed on 3rd October 2008 and it is proposed to phase-in the new scheme from 1st January 2009. Contact James Hodge for further information on the scheme.
