The Shian, built in 1901 is a delightful Arts and Crafts country house of brick construction under a rosemary tiled roof with pretty astragal windows. It lies within a substantial garden in a peaceful and private location. It combines traditional and period features beautifully with modern day living.
The name Shian is a Gaelic word meaning “Home of the Fairies” (pronounced shee-an) which also refers to a fairy hill. The sìthein are often small conical hills, and in Celtic mythology they were reputed to have hollow interiors, with the fairies dwelling inside. Belief in the ‘wee folk’ continued into relatively modern times.
