Nearby Selkirk has a population of around 6,000 and is beautifully situated on rising ground above the Ettrick Water. The town has a long and colourful history and its amenities include a good range of shops, primary and secondary schools, sporting and leisure facilities. Melrose has a good range of hotels, restaurants and shops and each of Galashiels and Hawick have a good choice of supermarkets.
The Borders Railway, which terminates at Tweedbank, has a regular train service to Edinburgh.

Turn right at the T-junction before fairly quickly turning left on to a private track signed “Dairy Cottage and Friarshawmuir”. Continue up this track for about 0.3 miles before turning left in to the Merlin’s Keep driveway.
