Local amenities are found in the nearby village of Ednam (about 1 mile from Houndrige) and these include a primary school, church and village hall.

Nearby Kelso is considered by many to be the most attractive of the Borders towns and is noted particularly for its fine market square and for the remains of one of the great Border Abbeys. Kelso provides a good shopping centre together with an excellent range of social and sporting facilities including golf, bowls, tennis, swimming, curling, National Hunt Racing and fishing.

An impressive new high school has recently been built on the northern edge of Kelso. There is also an impressive new primary school at Broomlands.

The surrounding countryside is noted for its scenic beauty and Kelso has good road links with the other principal towns in the Scottish Borders. There are railway stations at both Tweedbank (18 miles) and Berwick upon Tweed (20 miles).
