Oglaby lies close to Stromness, the second biggest town on the Orkney mainland. The house is on an elevated site with stunning views over the town to Hoy Sound, Hoy and Scapa Flow.
The Orkney Islands lie about 20 miles north of the Scottish mainland and are famous for their ancient historical sites and their pivotal roles in both world wars. The landscape is of undulating hills dotted with small farms and a spectacular coastline of high cliffs and wide beaches.

Stromness is a charming town with flagstone streets and lanes centred round its harbour. There is a good range of shops and amenities including schooling up to secondary level, a leisure centre, golf course and the ferry terminal, while the town is also host to annual arts festivals. Kirkwall, the main town on the island, is characterful and historic with narrow streets, its harbour, and the magnificent St Magnus Cathedral at its heart. The town has a wider range of amenities including a hospital and airport.

Oglaby has been in the same family since it was built in 1894 and has never before been offered for sale. The house is in a prominent position set above the town and played an important role in WW2 when it was used as the officers’ mess.
The house is now in need of some modernisation, but retains much of its original interior with well-proportioned rooms, wood panelling, a gracious staircase, plasterwork, fireplaces and tower room. On the ground floor the reception rooms have beautiful water and island views, while the kitchen and pantries lie to the rear. The first floor landing leads to the bedrooms, one with a tower dressing room. The extensive floored attic is reached via a staircase from the landing.
