Broughton nearby has a village shop and a tea room, an excellent primary school, an art gallery and a garage, as well as the famous Broughton Brewery, all serving the wider rural community. There is also a village tennis club and a bowling green. Peebles and Biggar are larger local towns with excellent shops, renowned secondary schools and recreational facilities. Edinburgh is 30 miles to the north and Moffat and the M74 is about 20 miles to the south.
The area is favoured by many for its excellent sporting facilities including extensive hill walking, challenging mountain biking, with dedicated trails at Glentress, Peebles and Innerleithen, a variety of golf courses in the area and sporting fishing in the Tweed and the upper Clyde and their tributaries.
