Galashiels is a popular Borders town with a fairly central location within the region and benefits from a good range of shops (including 2 major supermarkets) and a wide variety of recreational and sporting facilities. St Peter’s Primary School lies within a few minutes walk of Birken and Galashiels Academy is also within easy reach. Part of Heriot Watt University is located in the town.

Birken is one of a number of attractive traditional large houses built in Galashiels in the 1800s for prosperous mill owners. Birken itself was built for James Cochrane Dorward in the 1860s.
