Houston Mill is a 17th century watermill with adjoining miller’s cottage which has been sympathetically restored and converted over the years. The present owners have significantly upgraded the property, which now offers excellent family accommodation over two floors, in an idyllic location on the banks of the River Tyne. There are two main buildings; a refurbished American barn style stable block adjacent to the arena, including three good-sized loose boxes (each 14ft x 12.2ft) with rubber floors and automatic water drinkers, a feed area and large covered standing area, and a separate secure tack room (3m x 4.5m) complimented by a two bay hay barn/general storage shelter (9m x 3.5m) A gravelled parking area provides good turning and parking space for horse lorries.

The second outbuilding is accessed via a separate track, and is a spacious barn/manshed (27m x 10m) currently used for housing tractors and garden machinery, and includes a log store and four excellent sized lockable rooms (each approx. 5m x 5m) used as a workshop and for storage, with easy access via full sized sliding doors from both ends of the barn.

Houston Mill dates from the 17th century and is Grade B listed, primarily for its historic interest as the home of Andrew Meikle (1719-1811), the Scottish mechanical engineer and inventor of windmill spring sails and the water-powered threshing machine, who is buried in the nearby Prestonkirk churchyard. John Rennie, who learned his trade from Andrew Meikle, went on to build Waterloo Bridge, East India Docks and two naval dockyards. Both are honoured in the Scottish Engineering Hall of Fame.

Exit the A1 onto the A199 (Dunbar Road) at the second Haddington exit and follow signs towards East Linton. Do not take the turn off into the village but continue to the next roundabout (the Phantassie roundabout). Take the first exit, doubling back into East Linton and within approximately 50 metres turn right at the Houston Mill Bus stop, into an old listed farm steading. Follow the farm road, passing the steading on its right hand side, and continue along the tarmac road to the end. Houston Mill is the second turn on the left-hand side at the end of this road.

East Linton is a pretty conservation village situated just off the A1 approximately 24 miles east of Edinburgh. The village has a thriving community and amenities are centred around a small village square and an attractive high street, which provide an excellent range of local shops including a delicatessen, butcher, coop, restaurants/pubs, a Post Office, village hall and doctors surgery. The nearby towns of North Berwick, Dunbar and Haddington supplement this offering with supermarkets and a range of high street shops, banks, professional services, hotels and restaurants.

East Linton has an excellent primary school and there are secondary schools in North Berwick, Dunbar and Haddington. There are three well regarded independent schools in the area: The Compass School in Haddington, Belhaven Hill - the co-educational prep school - on the outskirts on Dunbar and Loretto in Musselburgh.
