Ratho is a pretty conservation village lying to the west of Edinburgh, within easy reach of city centre. With signs of settlement in the area dating back to pre-historic times, the local parish church is thought to have been a site of worship since the 12th Century. Ratho is centred round the Union Canal, once part of the quickest and most important transport routes across Scotland. During the 19th Century the canal provided a vital link for goods transportation, and Ratho was an important stopping off point, providing sustenance to travellers and a "change house" for horses. The canals declined with the advent of the railway in the 1840s. More recently, the Union Canal has undergone a full restoration as part of the Millennium Link project, and now forms part of a network stretching as far as Glasgow, via the Falkirk Wheel. Ratho, with its pretty whinstone cottages, Canal Centre and award winning Bridge Inn, offers a particularly pretty stretch of waterway, popular for boating, walking and cycling enthusiasts alike.

"The Priory", located in a quiet cul de sac within the village, dates from around 1838, and was believed to have been the former home of the well known Scottish surgeon James Craig. It was latterly purchased by the Catholic Mission and occupied by the White Fathers, before being refurbished and re-designed in the 1990s.

The Priory, 6 Lidgate Shot forms the end part of this handsome and imposing Victorian stone built property. This substantial family home offers generous living space, with well proportioned and flexible accommodation over three floors. The house has been extensively upgraded, while conserving its period features such as cornicing and sash and case windows, now all double glazed. With its high ceilings and bright, generously proportioned rooms, it is ideal for entertaining and everyday family life.

The main reception rooms are on the ground floor. From the front door, a vestibule with W.C. leads, via a formal dining room to a generously proportioned reception room, with southerly facing triple window to the front. Doors lead via the main hall to the bright kitchen/breakfast room, which has a range of floor and wall units and ample space for a dining table.

From the main hall there is an additional door to the rear garden, and stairs with a bespoke cast iron balustrade leading to the first floor. On the first floor are two well proportioned rooms offering flexible living space. There is a generously proportioned master bedroom with useful built in storage and an en-suite shower room. The twin windowed living/family room could also be used as a second double bedroom. An immaculate family bathroom with underfloor heating is also located here. The second floor has two charming double bedrooms, with arched sash and case windows offering views to the east and south to The Pentlands. These are complimented by an additional W.C.

Gardens and Grounds:
There is a small, private garden to the rear of the house, comprising a sunny south-west facing patio, an area of lawn and a tarmaced drive. A double garage with electric up and over doors offers useful outside storage.
