The Cottage sits just north of the small coastal hamlet of Browhouses, just outside the village of Eastriggs. Eastriggs is famous for The Devils Porridge, a munitions factory producing cordite during WW1. A narrow gauge railway ran from the coast through what is now the garden of The Cottage and on to the factory, carrying raw materials and the young women workers who were billeted nearby. What is now the Master bedroom of The Cottage was once the guards room. A purpose built museum has been built in Eastriggs commemorating the factory. A small number of amenities including a primary school and Spar convenience store with Post Office are available.
The house itself is within walking distance of the Solway coast, at Browhouses, and the area has great dog walking opportunities for your four-legged friend. Many bird watching enthusiasts also find it a rich environment.
A wider range of shops, schools and services are available in the nearby towns of Annan and Gretna. Dumfries is the regional capital around 20 miles west and has a wide range of high street shops, college and university campuses, and a large hospital. All the usual city amenities are available 13 miles south in Carlisle, including rail links to the south and London. The M74 and M6 are available at Gretna giving fast routes north and south, meaning Glasgow, Edinburgh and Newcastle are within easy reach.
The Cottage is a family home which has been created by extending an original cottage to form a spacious modern dwelling. With double glazing and LPG central heating the property is comfortable and efficient. The Master Bedroom has an en suite shower room and walk in wardrobe. The main bathroom has a Jacuzzi style bath, with shower over. A versatile attic room provides additional space which could be utilised in a number of ways. The large mature garden is perfect for entertaining with a wraparound patio and summer house, and has a second vehicular entrance by the workshop, which would enable a second house to be built, subject to obtaining planning consent.
