St John’s Town of Dalry has both a primary and secondary school, shop, 24 hour garage, two hotels, village hall, church, and a bank. The CatStrand Community and Arts centre, providing film screening, workshops and community events, café, and the Glenkens Medical Practice are located in the nearby village of New Galloway.

A broader range of facilities can be found in Castle Douglas, which is known as Scotland’s Food Town and has many local individual shops and businesses providing a varied selection of gifts, foods and services. There are both primary and secondary schools in the town along with supermarkets, health services, veterinary services, golf course and a livestock market. Dumfries is the principal town in the area, and provides a wider range of schools, shops, retail outlets and other services including a larger hospital, Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. A new, state of the art Hospital is currently under construction, scheduled for completion in December 2017. Also in Dumfries there is the Crichton Campus providing further, higher education courses.

The South West of Scotland is well known for its mild climate, attractive unspoilt countryside and the diversity of sporting and recreational pursuits, and is a popular tourist destination. There is excellent hill walking in the nearby Galloway Hills and cycling along some of the new designated cycle routes as well the Seven Stanes mountain bike routes, including Dalbeattie Forest and the Galloway Forest Park. The Galloway Forest Park which is known for its beauty and tranquillity is also recognised as Britain’s First Dark Sky Park, which provides astronomers phenomenal unique views of the stars. There are numerous sporting opportunities such as shooting and stalking, as well as trout and salmon fishing on the regions numerous lochs and rivers. For golf enthusiasts there is a nine hole golf course in New Galloway, the championship course at Southerness on the Solway Coast, as well as several other courses in the nearby area. The Solway coast is popular with sailors and at both Kippford and Kirkcudbright moorings are available. In addition Kirkcudbright is the local Artists town with a number of galleries offering a range of art exhibitions throughout the year, individual shops, and in the summer months the Kirkcudbright Summer Festivities are held. Communications to the area are very good. There is a main line railway station in Dumfries and also Lockerbie providing excellent links to both the north and south. There are regular flights to other parts of the UK, Ireland and Continental Europe from Prestwick Airport 40 miles north. Glasgow and Edinburgh Airports miles are 70 and 102 miles respectively.
