Barend House sits in a peaceful woodland setting with views over the Solway Firth. The house is accessed through Barend Holiday Village 200m from the popular Sandyhills beach and shop. The nearest village Colvend provides an excellent village shop and primary school. Nearby Kippford is very popular with tourists and provides two hotels, the Solway Yacht Club, Village Hall, golf course with tea room, RNLI, and a gift shop/small delicatessen called The Ark, village Holiday Park, and a pottery. The nearby town of Dalbeattie has a good range of shops, cafes, hotels, restaurants, new primary and secondary school, doctors’ surgery, solicitor and a park with a boating lake and bandstand. The market town of Castle Douglas is known as Scotland’s Food Town and has local individual shops, schools, supermarkets, health services, veterinary services and nine hole golf course. Dumfries is the principal town in the area, and provides a wider range of schools, shops, retail outlets, and other services including a major new hospital, the Dumfries and Galloway Royal Infirmary. Dumfries is home to the Crichton campuses of Glasgow University and the University of the West of Scotland.

The South West of Scotland is well known for its mild climate, attractive unspoilt countryside and the diversity of sporting and recreational pursuits. There is good hill walking in the nearby Galloway Hills and cycling along some of the new designated cycle routes as well the Seven Stanes mountain bike routes, including Dalbeattie Forest and the Galloway Forest Park. For walking enthusiast there are many lovely walks in the area for all abilities including from Kippford to the village of Rockcliffe along the Jubilee Path, and coastal walks along the cliffs at Portling to Sandyhills, providing one of the most popular beaches in Dumfries and Galloway. (Please note the tides on this stretch of the Solway Coast come in very quickly owing to the flat sands). A short distance from Barend, an abundance of birdlife can be seen at Mersehead RSPB Nature Reserve. The Reserve covers an area of wetland and saltmarsh (and a working farm) and sighted there are barnacle geese, lapwings, and also natterjack toads and other wildlife situated in beautiful surroundings with stunning views of the Solway coastline and countryside.

There are other sporting opportunities such as shooting and stalking, as well as trout and salmon fishing on the regions numerous lochs and rivers. For golf enthusiasts there is the nearby championship course at Southerness, 5.5miles away, and there are several other courses nearby including Colvend, Dalbeattie, and Castle Douglas. The Solway coast is popular with sailors and Kippford and Kirkcudbright have safe moorings.

Communications to the area are good. There are mainline railway stations in both Dumfries and Lockerbie, providing excellent links to both the north and south. The M74 motorway network is 30 miles distant, and there are regular flights to other parts of the UK, Ireland and Continental Europe from Prestwick Airport about 69 miles distant, Glasgow Airport 102 miles distant and Edinburgh Airport 116 miles distant.
