The area offers wonderful sporting and recreational opportunities and is well known for its mild climate and long growing season. There are numerous lochs and rivers locally providing entertaining fishing as well as salmon and sea trout fishing on some of Dumfriesshire’s larger rivers such as the Nith and the Annan. Colvend golf course is situated nearby, whilst the championship course of Southerness is only eight miles to the east. There is also a local 9 hole par 3 golf course at Craigieknowes, useful for improving the short game, or just starting out. The area is also perfect for cycling along the quiet country roads as well as mountain biking in the nearby forest parks forming part of the nationally renowned Seven Stanes routes. It is also an idyllic location for walkers with numerous coastal walks, and hill walking in the nearby Galloway Hills and Forest. Equestrian pursuits are popular in the region, with several schools and livery facilities throughout. For nature lovers, there is the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at Caerlaverock near Dumfries, as well as an abundance of countryside and walks where many native species can be seen
