Elderslie House is located in the coastal village of Auchencairn. The village has its own church, primary school, Bowling Green, shop with Post Office and a day crèche. There is a thriving village community with clubs, societies and events. A bus route runs to the local towns direct from the centre of the village, and school buses run to all three secondary schools in the area in Dalbeattie, Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbright. There are beaches and lovely walks in and around the village, and also along the two mile single track road running adjacent to Elderslie and leading to Balcary Bay. The Balcary Bay Hotel provides first class dining and accommodation.
The nearby towns of Dalbeattie, Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbright all provide a range of shops and services including health centres, cottage hospitals, dentists, solicitors, supermarkets and individual shops such as butchers, bakers, hardware stores, gift and furnishings. All three towns have primary and secondary schools, as well as cafes, hotels and restaurants. A broader range of high street chains and retail parks, along with a university campus and large hospital is available in the regional capital of Dumfries, some 21 miles east.
The South West of Scotland is well known for its mild climate, attractive unspoilt countryside and the diversity of sporting and recreational pursuits. There is good hill walking in the nearby Galloway Hills and cycling along designated cycle routes, as well the Seven Stanes mountain bike routes, including Dalbeattie Forest and the Galloway Forest Park. There are many other sporting opportunities such as shooting and stalking, as well as trout and salmon fishing on the regions numerous lochs and rivers. Equestrian pursuits are well catered for throughout the region with several riding schools and livery businesses. For golf enthusiasts there is the championship course at Southerness and several other courses nearby including Kippford, Dalbeattie, and Castle Douglas. The Solway coast is popular with sailors, and Kippford and Kirkcudbright have safe moorings. In addition, Kirkcudbright is the Artists Town with a number of galleries offering a range of exhibitions throughout the year.
Communications to the area are good. There are mainline railway stations in both Dumfries and Lockerbie, providing excellent links north and south. The M74 motorway network is around 50 miles distant, and there are regular flights to other parts of the UK, Ireland and Continental Europe from Prestwick Airport, around 60 miles north. Edinburgh and Glasgow, with their international airports, can be reached in around two hours.
