There are other sporting opportunities such as shooting and stalking, as well as trout and salmon fishing on the region’s numerous lochs and rivers. For golf enthusiasts there is the nearby championship course at Southerness, and there are several other courses nearby including Castle Douglas and Kirkcudbright. The Solway coast has a variety of beaches and is also popular with sailors, with both Kippford and Kirkcudbright having safe moorings.

There are main line railway stations in Dumfries and Lockerbie, providing excellent links to both the north and south, London can be reached by train in around 3.5/4 hours. The M74 motorway network is 43 miles distant, and there are regular flights to other parts of the UK, Ireland and Continental Europe from Prestwick Airport 56 miles and both Glasgow and Edinburgh international airports 89 miles and 99 miles respectively.
