The popular town of Largs (5 miles) with its beach promenade has an excellent variety of independent shops and cafes, secondary schooling, supermarket shopping, a range of sporting facilities including tennis court, swimming pool and golf club. Kelburn Castle and Estate (7 miles) is a natural attraction with a variety of woodland walks, walled garden, history trails, regular events and cafe. Skelmorlie village has a primary school, village shop, library, bowling club, community centre and pharmacy, there is a popular 18 hole golf course located above the village. Wemyss Bay (1.5 miles) and Largs have railway stations with services to Glasgow and beyond. Secondary school is available in Largs and Greenock (10 miles) and private schooling is available in Kilmacolm, Glasgow and Ayr. Glasgow Airport is about 26 miles and Glasgow City Centre is reached in about an hour (35 miles). The attractive craft town of West Kilbride is 13 miles south, with its independent shops, cafes, delicatessen and galleries and beautiful sandy beach.
There are some excellent walks available in the local area with some interesting sections of the Ayrshire Coastal Path (55 miles long) including a superb higher level route from Largs to Skelmorlie providing spectacular views. By Loch Thom, there is a pleasant circular walk over moorland and along the Greenock cut (6.5 miles), an aqueduct which is now a registered Designated Ancient Monument with lovely views over the Clyde. Excellent sailing facilities are available at Largs Marina (4 miles) and Kip Marina (4.5 miles) providing access to some of the best sailing waters on the west coast of Scotland. Marinas are also available at Troon (30 miles), Port Bannatyne (Bute) and Portavadie (Loch Fyne) which has one of the UK’s most modern marinas, with sheltered berthing and superb facilities and boatyard services. There are regular ferry trips to Rothesay from Wemyss Bay where you can visit Mount Stuart (a 19th century mansion house with extravagant interiors and extensive gardens), Dunoon is home to the outstanding Benmore Botanical Gardens. The Cowal Peninsula is a popular area for sailing, hiking, kayaking and outdoor adventures.

Makalu is situated in a fabulous elevated position with far reaching sea views and wonderful established landscaped gardens. The house was built in 1992, the name Makalu comes from the world’s fifth highest mountain at 8,485 metres which is located in the Himalayas, some 12 miles south east of Mount Everest. The current vendors purchased the property in 2004 and have re-designed and renovated the house to make the most of the expansive sea views which many of the rooms provide. All electrics were replaced, new central heating system installed, ceilings were raised, new windows and doors throughout. The doors are Brazilian hardwood and skirtings American white oak. Built on 3 levels, the outer walls are of cavity brickwork (of timber frame) with a white render finish and tiled roof with overhanging eaves.

From Glasgow, take the M8 west towards Glasgow Airport. Follow the M8 towards Bishopton and on to Greenock Road. Proceed along this road onto the B7054 and then the A78 passing Greenock and Gourock. After Inverkip Marina, travel for about 2.7 miles to Wemyss Bay. After passing the Ferry Terminal, turn left onto Station Road and follow the road up the hill. At the next junction, continue straight across on to Eglinton Gardens and then straight on to Eglinton Terrace. Makalu (No 10b) is on your right hand side after about 0.7 miles.
From Largs, continue north along the A78 for about 4 miles. Turn right onto Eglinton Terrace (Upper Skelmorlie) and proceed up the hill, Makalu is then on the left hand side once you reach the top of the hill.
