When it was completed in 1848, the Ballochmyle Viaduct featured the largest masonry arch anywhere in the world. A particularly stunning section of the River Ayr Way is the Mauchline Gorge walk, with its sandstone cliffs and ring markings dating back to 1751.

From Ayr, take the B743 towards Mauchline. Proceed through Failford and then turn right after about 1.5 miles, follow this road to Barskimming Road and turn right, then first left. At the next junction, turn right onto Haugh Road and proceed along this road for about 0.6 miles over the small bridge and Braehead Cottage is on the left hand side.
