Historically known as the Lace Town, Darvel was the centre of this Irvine Valley industry from the 1870s and famous for its exports throughout the world, as well as being known as the birthplace of Alexander Fleming.
Garden Cottage boasts stunning views across to Loudoun Hill, famous for King Robert the Bruces defeat of the English. It is located about 1.5 miles from Darvel which offers local facilities, including a medical centre and a primary school. Glasgow Prestwick Airport is about 19 miles distant, whilst Glasgow International Airport is about 32 miles. There are good road links to Glasgow via the A/M77 and the railway station in Kilmarnock has regular commuter connections to Glasgow and beyond.
The surrounding rolling countryside of the Irvine Valley offers a network of country lanes, ideal for walking and hacking. There are many opportunities for games sports in the area and some of South West Scotlands finest salmon and trout fishing. Ayrshire is renowned for its many golf courses including the world famous courses at Turnberry, Prestwick and Royal Troon. The privately owned Loudon Gowf Club is near Newmilns, about a 10 minute drive.
The beautiful Lanfine Estate has some delightful woodland walks and pathways, part of which Lanfine Woods has many exotic trees and conifers. The pleasant walk from Ranoldcoup Bridge leading to Lanfine House has a wonderful mix of coniferous and deciduous tree planting including Scots pine, sycamore and lime.
Garden Cottage is a superb detached country cottage with large garden grounds, stables and a separate outbuilding with a studio, garage, kennels, wood store and boiler room.
Once occupied by one of the Gardeners for Lanfine Estate, Garden Cottage has been sympathetically restored and upgraded to an exceptionally high standard to create a wonderful 3 bedroom cottage with 2 reception rooms, ground floor guest bedroom, luxury bathroom and 2 bedrooms (master en suite) on the first floor.
Built in 1860, the Victorian cottage is constructed of stone with a slate roof, attractive red sandstone detailing and an impressive red pillared entrance. Pine framed double glazed windows with hand made fasteners and internal natural oak doors throughout complement the attractive rooms. The current owners have incorporated numerous energy saving features, with each room installed with a wood burning stove including the first floor bedrooms. It has oil fired central heating, double glazing and a high degree of insulation has been incorporated in the structure of the ceiling and walls making it a comfortable environment with the property compatible with efficient use of the oil fired heating installation. All fascias and soffits have been replaced with new rainwater fittings, enabling rainwater to drain more efficiently.
There are extensive garden grounds and parking amounting to 0.34 acres incorporating private lawns, seating areas and pond with long reaching views from the rear. In addition there is a timber stable block and tack room.
The spacious grounds comprise mainly lawned gardens with private wooden gates giving access to the carefully planned studio, garage and stables. In 1829, Lanfine Estate was inherited by Thomas Brown, a physician and Professor of Botany at Glasgow University, and it is very likely that the walled gardens were built for Profesor Brown.
