Primary schooling is available in Ochiltree, Auchinleck and Coylton. Secondary schooling is available at Auchinleck and Cumnock, and a new super school campus at Knockroon (between Cumnock and Auchinleck) is in the process of being built and Cumnock also provides a leisure centre (Visions Leisure) with swimming pool, gym and fitness classes. Cumnock (4 miles distant) offers a variety of local shops, restaurants and sporting facilities. Nearby places of interest include Dumfries House, a Palladian country house set in a 2,000 acre estate with an outstanding collection of 18th century furniture, beautiful walled gardens owned by HRH Prince Charles, with visitor centre, Coach House café and shop. At Auchinleck Estate (about 2 miles) there are splendid riverside walks to Wallace’s Cave and Peden’s Cave. Auchinleck Mansion House, was built by Lord Auchinleck, James Boswell in the late 1700s. The Scottish classic-style mansion was designed by Robert Adam, one of Scotland’s most famous architects. There is a popular coffee shop and gift shop (Boswell’s Coach House) within the Estate grounds. Lochside House and Spa is also close by and has a well respected reputation for high quality service. The Tamar Manoukian New Cumnock outdoor swimming pool, refurbished by the Dumfries House Estate is about 9 miles south. Coylton (6 miles) also has local services, shops and a medical practice.

The county town of Ayr is about 11 miles distant with a comprehensive range of excellent shopping, restaurants, cinemas and sports facilities. There are good private and state schools in the area too. Glasgow city centre is within a 50 minute drive. There are excellent transport links in the area with a regular train service to Glasgow from Kilmarnock and Auchinleck (3 miles). Glasgow Prestwick Airport is about 15 miles away with regular scheduled international flights and Glasgow International Airport is about 40 miles.

Ayrshire is renowned for its many golf courses including the world famous courses at Royal Troon and Turnberry, Ballochmyle Golf Course, Mauchline (4.5 miles) is a popular 18 hole course. There is the popular Racecourse in Ayr and excellent yachting facilities at the Marina in Troon.

The 44 mile River Ayr Way long distance walk is close by, and the route travels along by Sorn Castle and the Ballochmyle Viaduct at Mauchline which are both splendid sections of the walk. Built in the 1840s, the viaduct is the highest extant railway viaduct in Britain being 169 feet (52m) high. A particularly stunning section of the River Ayr Way is the Mauchline Gorge walk, with its sandstone cliffs and ring markings dating back to 1751.

There are many opportunities for game sports in the area and Ayrshire has some of South West Scotland’s salmon and trout fishing.
