However Flora Badger, a successful lettings agent for Scottish property consultancy CKD Galbraith knows her job is anything but dull and it suits her adventurous personality perfectly.
It was the various bar jobs Flora did part time whilst studying Ecological Science at Edinburgh University which led her into the hospitality trade once she'd graduated. She's a strong believer in allowing yourself to be side-tracked in life as it often leads you to where you are actually meant to be!
After a spell in hotel management Flora moved on to property management where she found her natural social and organisational skills were a real asset. She has been working in the rental sector for almost a decade now and joined CKD Galbraith in 2012 as lettings manager; covering the whole of the Highlands and Islands region.
Flora is a busy woman but knows the key to success is learning to prioritise and having a super-efficient office manager keeping you right! Flora said; "As lettings manager there is rarely a dull day, a clich I realise but there are many challenges and sometimes it gets so busy that I meet myself coming back in the door as I rush out and about!
"I have always been a good problem solver so the job suits me well but it's also important to build good relationships with clients, both landlords and tenants. This is often done through honesty and maintaining regular contact; keeping them informed of legislative changes and maintenance work to their properties or often just reassurance that the minor details are being dealt with for them. I'm often mediator between tenant and landlord too, so for tenants it's important that I give a sense of security and impartiality.
"Overall I'd say that 40% of my time is spent out the office, I get to travel all over the Highlands to visit properties, clients and tenants, this has given me quite a few interesting tales over the years. One of the most memorable trips was when I went to do a property viewing in Dalcross and couldn't get up the very long drive way as two lambs were stuck down the cattle grid. I managed to free one but the other lamb had been gorging on the grass growing in the grid and was too fat to get out so I had to hunt for a nearby farmer to rescue it!
"Another property visit resulted in me accessing the house via a cat flap as the keys didn't work. I've also taken trips to clients on remote islands which meant arriving by private boat, probably the most breath-taking commute I've ever taken on a working day.
"CKD Galbraith takes on many high-quality lets in some of the most scenic hot-spots in Scotland. There is still a feel of excitement for me when I go to view a new property for the first time and the variety of people I've come into contact with as a lettings agent has been fantastic.
"I think a lot of people imagine anyone involved in real estate to be a sleazy sales person. In my experience this couldn't be any further from the reality, especially at CKD Galbraith where agents are highly experienced, have excellent knowledge of the communities and areas they cover and are extremely friendly and honest.
