Homes for Horses

10 April 2015

It’s Grand National weekend with the big race taking place at 16.15 on Saturday. Traditionally the event in the racing calendar which even non-racing fans have a once-a-year flutter on and sit down to watch, last year property portal Rightmove reported that visitors to their website dropped by 15% when the race entered its final straight!

But why should you have to choose between horses and houses? Ahead of the world’s greatest steeplechase we pick out some favourite homes with equestrian facilities (just in case you’re looking for something to spend your winnings on!)

Provanston - External

Under starter’s orders, we begin in picturesque rural Stirlingshire and a substantial equestrian property. Provanston is a period farmhouse thought to be over two hundred and fifty years old. Extended over the years, it retains a number of period features including exposed beams and the flag stone floor.

Provanston’s equestrian credentials are obvious: a stable block of with approximately thirty-three loose boxes (so not far off being able to house an entire Grand National field!); an amazing indoor arena and around 15.4 acres of land including a variety of paddocks.

Additionally there are various outbuildings as well as annex accommodation which could provide staff accommodation or be run as a self-catering holiday let.

In a prominent position above the village of Fintry, Provanston is surrounded by beautiful countryside and hills but is easily accessed by road and convenient for both Glasgow and Stirling.

Provanston - Paddocks

Provanston is for sale at a fixed price of £700,000.

Moving on to Angus now, Bellrigg is a spacious family home with three reception rooms; a breakfasting kitchen with Aga; six bedrooms and an attractive cottage garden.

Not just a wonderful place for people, your horses can live the lifestyle of champions too with equestrian facilities including a modern purpose built shed with four top of the range stables; an older brick stable block also with four stables and two paddocks totaling about 3.2 acres.

With good access to Abroath and within commuting distance of both Dundee and Aberdeen, Bellrigg is for sale with CKD Galbraith Cupar.

In the final furlong now we head to Ayrshire for a country house built in 2007. Merkland House stands in a very private location with unspoilt views over open countryside.

Another outstanding equestrian property, facilities include stabling for seven horses with tack room and feed room; an all weather floodlit riding arena and a well fenced paddock of around 3.21 acres.

Merkland House - Conservatory

Completed to a high standard throughout with features including a beautiful oak staircase; an impressive kitchen with granite worktops and an Elan Rangemaster as well as a conservatory overlooking the garden.

And of course it's not far from to Ayr Racecourse where the Scottish Grand National will held next weekend on 17 April!
